Quality of Life
Who is Grandma Deen?
She’s my (Bev) 93 year-old mother, who was born and raised in Florida. Mom and Dad moved our family of six to California when I was just three years old. Grandma Deen has four children, ten grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren. We lost Dad in 2010, and Mom has been our family matriarch. Mom is a font of wisdom, and so much of what I’ve learned about aging gracefully, I’ve learned from her. She’s active, well-read, and a font of knowledge. She enjoys shopping on Amazon and frequently sends me her requests, and I do all of the ordering. It’s fun to see what she comes up with next. It seemed fitting that we have a section devoted to her and her favorite finds. I’ve put her autobiography “Pecans and Magnolias” under “Grandma Deen’s Favorites” just in case you’d like to learn about her and what life was like growing up in Florida in the 30’s and 40’s.
Folks can’t always impact their quantity of life, but they sure can
influence their quality of life. We can make an effort to stay as healthy as
possible both mentally and physically. It’s not always an easy journey, but
we owe it to ourselves to approach life in the most positive way possible
Simple things can make a big difference. My sweetheart always
amazes me with how the smallest of things can bring her happiness. She
will find a penny in a parking lot, and it puts a smile on her face. It’s a win
for her! She walks back to the car or into the store and is already happy. A
song might come on the radio, and I’ll discover her taking a quick moment
to dance merrily about the room. Simple things.
Daily moments of happiness make a strong contribution to our overall
health and well-being. When you’re filled with worry, your body seems to
correspond with a heavy, weighted feeling. I think when you are happy,
you are more energized. Has that been your experience?
It does take a village. We need to share with each other ways to make
the journey easier. Isolation is a known problem in the senior world. We
need to take care of our fellow seniors. We must look out for each other.
I make it a point to say hello, nod my head in acknowledgement, smile at
seniors, give them time to talk, and make them feel important…..because
they are. Bev and I both relish sharing anything that will help our senior
friends along the way. We’re both on our city’s Aging Task Force with the
goal of positively impacting the seniors of our town. Bev writes an Aging in
Place column for the local newspaper with the purpose of helping fellow
seniors. I write for 50+ Magazine for the same reason. We created a
Facebook page for local seniors where members share activities and
resources.
We hope you find that the ideas and product recommendations will cause
you or your loved ones some happiness and a higher level of quality of life.
It’s also our hope that you’ll share some of your favorite products and best
tips with us. We are expected to live longer, therefore, we need to be
intentional about living a happy, satisfying life.
